The 2020 model year was offered in the special Hakone edition, which the later GR86 Hakone Edition pays tribute to. In late July 2020 Subaru ended production of the first generation BRZ, and no more orders were accepted. The second generation BRZ debuted on 18 November 2020. The development code of the 2+2 was 086A, and the eight six references the historic AE86. Toyota bought 16.5 percent of Fuji Heavy Industries, which includes the Subaru automotive brand, in 2008.
