In Australia the Subaru BRZ was the first new car ever to be sold on that market exclusively online, with orders opening on 16 July 2012. Top Gear Australia crowned it Fun-est Car of the Year against the Toyota 86 and several others. Toyota and Subaru had shown the production Toyota 86 at the December 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, and the BRZ began sale in 2012. The Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ were inspired by Toyota's earlier AE86, a small, light, front engine and rear drive Corolla variant popular for racing and drifting.
