The Range Rover of 1997 carried the Rover V8 in 4.0 or 4.6-litre form, or the BMW 2.5-litre diesel, with ABS brakes as a feature and in some automatic cars two-wheel traction control. The 4.6-litre petrol could only be had with the ZF 4HP24 automatic, and had a four-pin rear differential. The chassis had been made stronger and new welding techniques used, so it was less prone to corrosion than the Classic. In 1997 Land Rover's Freelander was in its first year.
