Series IV Metropolitan production began on January 12, 1959 with a major redesign that added an external trunk lid, a one piece rear window and vent windows, and an engine with higher compression rated at 55 horsepower. Sales rose to 22,209 units in 1959, the Metropolitan's best selling year, which made it second to Volkswagen among cars imported to the United States, a ranking that American Motors advertising made much of.
