The 1950 Ambassador became the first car outside General Motors to be fitted with GM's Hydramatic automatic transmission, and cars so equipped used the Selecto Lift starting system, where the driver pulled the column lever toward himself to engage the starter. The Airflyte body continued with only four door and two door sedans offered, built at Kenosha and El Segundo, and Ambassador sales gained noticeably over the earlier postwar bodies.
