The British Motor magazine tested a Cowley saloon in 1955 and recorded a top speed of 71.9 miles per hour, a time from rest to 60 miles per hour of 31.5 seconds and a fuel consumption of 28 miles per imperial gallon. The test car cost 702 pounds including taxes. The Cowley 1200 had plastic covered felt in place of interior carpet and fixed quarter lights, as a simplified Oxford. The Cowley shared its torsion bar front suspension with the Oxford.
