The seventh generation Galant of 1992 brought a Japan only hardtop called the Emeraude, and the VR-4 was no longer limited by sporting rules once the Lancer Evolution was homologated. A five door liftback had its world premiere at the Dutch Motor Show in February 1993. Production in the United States began on 24 May 1993 at Normal, Illinois, and in Asia the sedan appeared in late 1993. The facelift came in October 1994 with a fuel injected DOHC 1.8 liter engine. Its model years run from 1992 to 1995.
