The fourth generation Eterna appeared in October 1988. Under the policy of Mitsubishi that the sister of the main model lines would be a five door sedan, the four door sedan became a hatchback called a five door sedan. The flagship was the ZR-4 with the 4G63 turbo engine of the Galant VR-4 that was used in the World Rally Championship. The old square headlamp EXE series sedan went on being built. The Eterna was a sister car of the Galant, sold at the Car Plaza stores of Mitsubishi while the Galant was sold at the Galant stores.
