The first generation Eclipse was marketed as an entry to mid level sports coupes, developed for North America where sales began in the autumn of 1989. Japanese sales of cars imported from Illinois began in 1990, and limited European sales in late 1991. It had five trim levels, all front wheel drive except the all wheel drive GSX, and the GS Turbo and GSX had turbocharged 2.0 liter 4G63T engines. Its low hood line needed a bump to clear the cam cover. It was built at Diamond-Star Motors. Its model years run from 1990 to 1994.
