The first Eclipse went on sale in North America in the autumn of 1989 as a 1990 model, and sales in Japan of cars imported from Illinois began in 1990. It was the result of the alliance between Mitsubishi Motors and Chrysler that created Diamond-Star Motors, and it was sold at the same time as the Eagle Talon and the Plymouth Laser. The GS Turbo and GSX had a turbocharged 2.0 liter 4G63T engine of 180 to 195 horsepower, and the GSX had all wheel drive.
