On October 20, 1989 Ford announced it was ending imports of the Scorpio to the United States, which with the end of the XR4Ti earlier that year effectively retired the Merkur brand. In total 22,010 examples were sold. New passive safety regulations coming into effect in 1990 meant that the Scorpio would need automatic seatbelts or airbags, and the Ford of Europe Granada and Scorpio range continued until 1994.
