The first generation Tracer was sold through the 1989 model year, coinciding with the model cycle of its Laser counterpart. Mexican assembly ended in August 1989, with late examples sold as 89 and a half models into calendar year 1990; in spite of the cancellation, Tracer sales in the United States picked up in model year 1989. In Canada, imports ended during 1989, with 1,775 cars sold in calendar year 1989. The Tracer was a front wheel drive subcompact developed by Mazda.
