For 1976 the Montego saw only nominal changes, centered primarily on improving fuel efficiency of the V8 engines. 1976 was the final year of the Montego as the Torino counterpart, because the Torino chassis intermediates underwent a mid cycle redesign for 1977, when Mercury discontinued the Montego nameplate and expanded the Cougar line to include a four door sedan and wagon. The second generation Montego was the Mercury counterpart of the Ford Torino.
