The first generation Ford Escort was launched on October 3, 1980 for the 1981 model year, with Lincoln Mercury marketing it as the Mercury Lynx, the successor to the Bobcat. It was front wheel drive with a transverse mounted engine, nearly six inches longer and over three inches taller than the Pinto. The Lynx shared its entire body with the Escort and was introduced in base, L, GL, GS, LS and RS trims. Its model years run from 1981 to 1987.
