The Lynx went on sale for 1981 as the Mercury version of the new front wheel drive Ford Escort, launched on October 3, 1980. It was initially introduced with three door hatchback and five door station wagon body styles, with a five door hatchback added in May 1981. It was the successor to the Mercury Bobcat, and its nameplate was again derived from wild cats. The Escort wagon was offered with an imitation woodgrain Squire package.
