The 1987 model year saw the retirement of the Mercury Lynx, replaced by the Mercury Tracer during 1987, a rebranded Ford Laser derived from the Mazda 323, which was sold alongside it for much of the year. For 1987 the standard Escort adopted throttle body fuel injection, dropping the carburetor, and the diesel engine was retired. 1987 was also the final year the Escort was built in Canada. It was front wheel drive with a transverse mounted engine.
