For the 1979 model year the full size Mercury model line was downsized, the cars 17 inches shorter and nearly 1,000 pounds lighter than their 1978 predecessors. While its exterior footprint closely matched the Cougar intermediate, the 1979 Grand Marquis offered more interior and luggage space. The Panther chassis was the first time that Ford and Mercury sedans shared the same wheelbase, with Mercury downsized from 124 to 114.3 inches.
