The first generation Mazda6 reached Japan as the Atenza in May 2002 and replaced the Capella and 626, which is why the 2003 Mazda6 is described as the seventh generation of the 626 family. It came as a sedan, a four door hatchback and a wagon, with 1.8, 2.0 and 2.3 liter Mazda MZR petrol engines, a 3.0 liter V6 for North America and turbodiesels in Europe and Australia. The sporting Mazdaspeed6 followed in 2006, and a facelift came in September 2005. Its model years run from 2002 to 2007.
