The 2003 model year was the first for the Mazda6 in the United States, where Mazda marketed it as the Sport Sedan, the 5-Door and the Sport Wagon. It took second place in the 2003 European Car of the Year awards, made the Ten Best list of Car and Driver and was named Irish Car of the Year. The Chinese market began that year too, when FAW Mazda introduced the car in China, where it was known as the Maliu.
