The Mazda6 went on sale in Japan as the Atenza in May 2002, the first car in Mazda's new design philosophy. Production for international markets began at the Hofu plant in February 2002, and the first North American car left the AutoAlliance International line in Michigan on 1 October 2002, a month after the 626 ended there. It was sold as a sedan, a hatchback and a wagon, and it won the best mid size car title in Australia's Best Cars that year.
