In 2001 Mazda changed the front and rear styling of the MX-5 and added variable valve timing to the 1.8 liter engine, which then made 142 horsepower, and made small changes to the interior. The updated cars are known as the NB2 and the earlier ones as the NB1. The MX-5 was on the Car and Driver 10Best list in 2001, and a six speed manual was available. With a nearly even front to rear weight balance, handling is close to neutral.
