On 30 June 1997 the cumulative production of the Demio reached 100,000. On 18 September a special edition, the 1.5 GL-X Special, limited to 3,000, was sold with a partial improvement that gave it the new corporate mark of Mazda that had come with the seventh generation Capella, and in December a limited run of 5,000 of the 1.3 LX-G Limited followed. Mazda built a fuel cell electric Demio, the Demio FCEV, in December 1997.
