The Bongo of 2018 was in its twentieth year of the fourth generation, the cabover van and truck last designed in house by Mazda, with the five speed automatic added in 2016. It continued to be sold in Japan as the Bongo, while Mazda planned to discontinue the Bongo in 2020 and focus on fuel efficient passenger cars. It also formed the basis for the long running Kia Bongo range. The Bongo was also known as the Ford Econovan and Eunos Cargo, and it has been built with rear, middle and front mounted engines.
