In 1983 the GC was released in South Africa, locally assembled by Sigma, and twenty diesel engined examples were imported officially into Australia. Ford Asia Pacific began to sell the 626 as the Ford Telstar from 1983, with slightly different styling and dashboard, in place of the European Ford Sierra. In September 1983 a 2.0 liter diesel was added to the lineup of the front wheel drive 626. Ford Asia Pacific sold the car as the Ford Telstar.
