In September 1982 the third generation Capella was released on the new front wheel drive GC platform. As before, the international version was the 626, and it was named Import Car of the Year by Motor Trend, Car of the Year Japan in 1982 and Wheels magazine's Car of the Year. In 1982 Mazda New Zealand offered a locally assembled limited edition called the Anniversary to mark ten years of local assembly. This generation used the new front wheel drive GC platform.
