New for the 1996 and 1997 models of the 626 were a redesigned hood with a raised centre portion, a chrome grille fairing attached to the hood, and On Board Diagnostics II. The last addition to the Japanese lineup was a two wheel drive version of the 2.0 GT engine, which arrived in June 1996. The Capella station wagon was still available in export markets until 1996, and in Canada the car dropped the Cronos name for 1996.
