The seventh generation, the BG, arrived in 1989 with a four door saloon called the Protege in North America, a 323F hatchback and Astina in other markets, and a Familia Infini special for Mazda's 70th anniversary in February 1990. The GT-X of 1990 had four wheel drive and a turbocharged 1.8 liter engine of 185 PS, and a GT-R followed in 1992, produced in around 5,000 units. Ford sold it as the Escort and Mercury Tracer in North America from 1991. Its model years run from 1989 to 1993.
