The first generation Town Car was the renamed Lincoln Continental for 1981, identical to the 1980 Continental apart from badging, on the downsized Panther platform. A two door sedan was offered for 1981 only, and the 302 cubic inch V8 became the only engine. In 1982 the Town Car overtook the Mark VI to become the best selling Lincoln, a title it kept to its end, and 1988 sales passed 200,000. Its model years run from 1981 to 1989.
