For 1981 Lincoln renamed the Continental as the Lincoln Town Car, moving its full size range from three nameplates to one, and with the exception of badging the Town Car was identical to the 1980 Continental. A two door sedan was offered for 1981, dropping the Town Coupe name, and after the introduction of the Town Car the 302 cubic inch V8 became the only available engine. The Continental name went on hiatus for 1981. It was built at Wixom Assembly in Michigan alongside the Lincoln Continental.
