For 1988 over 200,000 Town Cars were sold, the highest ever for the brand, in part because Ford started sales of the 1988 Town Car in March 1987, making for an 18 month model year. Rear air suspension was introduced as an option for all three Panther vehicles in 1988, and the eighth generation Lincoln Continental was launched that year with dual airbags standard, the first Ford with them. Its 302 cubic inch V8 was marketed as a 5.0 liter engine.
