The first Lexus LS, the LS 400, grew out of the F1 project that Toyota chairman Eiji Toyoda began in August 1983 to build a flagship sedan. It debuted at the Detroit show in January 1989 as a 1990 model, production began on 15 May 1989, and United States sales opened on 1 September 1989 at a base price of 35,000 dollars that undercut its European rivals. In Japan it was sold as the Toyota Celsior, which won the Car of the Year Japan award, and it was refreshed in September 1992 as a 1993 model with more than fifty changes.
