In July 2005 Holden announced that production of the current generation VZ Monaro CV8 would soon be coming to an end by the start of 2006, and this led to the run of a special edition model called the CV8 Z, of which 1,605 units were ultimately made. The Monaro was withdrawn from the United States market as the Pontiac GTO in 2006. The third generation was also remanufactured by Holden Special Vehicles as HSV badged derivatives from 2001 to 2006.
