The first generation Transit was introduced in October 1965, taking over directly from the Thames 400E, as the first product of the merged Ford of Europe. It came from the Redcap Project of 1963, which put Ford of Britain and Ford Werke on a unified platform. The van was produced initially at Ford's Langley facility in Berkshire, a former Second World War aircraft factory, with petrol Essex V4 engines in 1.7 and 2.0 liter sizes and Perkins diesels.
