For 1973 the Thunderbird grew in size and price. The front was restyled with an egg crate grille topped by a spring loaded hood ornament, to accommodate the larger five mile per hour bumpers required on all 1973 cars, and opera windows were added. It was the last year of the 429 engine and of leaded gasoline. The base price was 5,577 dollars early in the model year and 6,414 later, and 87,269 were built, the third highest production figure so far.
