The 1974 Thunderbird changed in response to new federal rules. A buzzer sounded if both front seat belts were not buckled in place of the old interlock, and five mile per hour rear bumpers added weight. The 460 cubic inch V8 from Lincoln-Mercury replaced the 429, and it required unleaded gasoline. It was the first year for special luxury group trims, burgundy at 411 dollars and white and gold at 546, and 58,443 were produced at a base price of 7,221 dollars.
