The redesigned 1972 Thunderbird simplified the body styles, dropping the two body styles of 1971 for a single two door hardtop line. Many exterior components were shared with the Continental Mark IV, and the interior was shared as well apart from the dashboard, which had round dials instead of the Mark IV's square gauges. The base engine was the 400 Cleveland, though most Thunderbirds were equipped with the 429 or the 460 instead.
