The 1959 Thunderbird brought changes to the front, rear and side ornamentation, and leather upholstery was offered for the first time. The rear suspension was revised, dropping the coil springs for Hotchkiss drive with parallel leaf springs. A new 430 cubic inch MEL V8 of 345 horsepower was available in small numbers. Sales almost doubled again, to 67,456 units, including 10,261 convertibles, with advertising aimed particularly at women.
