Production of the Square Bird began only on 20 December 1957, much later than the usual September, and the car went on sale in late January 1958. It captured Motor Trend's Car of the Year award in its debut season, the first individual model line, rather than a whole company, to win it. Sales of 37,892 more than doubled the year before, even though the convertible was not on sale until June, so only 2,134 were built.
