The fifth generation was the last Telstar, based on the Mazda GF platform and sold only in Japan as a sedan and a wagon, since Ford was marketing the Mondeo across the Asia Pacific region by then. Ford of Japan dropped the name in 1999 to set itself apart from Mazda. A fourth generation, the Telstar II of 1994 to 1997, shared its years with the third. Its model years run from 1997 to 1999. The Telstar was a Mazda 626 with Ford badges and some local styling, sold where Ford wanted a mid size car.
