Ford of Japan dropped the Telstar in 1999 to set itself apart from Mazda and to concentrate on European and American Ford models. It had been sold since 1982 as a Mazda built mid size car, and it was only ever offered with Ford badges in Asia, Australasia and Africa. Ford later replaced it in most markets with the Mondeo, which was developed as a world car. The Telstar was a Mazda 626 with Ford badges and some local styling, sold where Ford wanted a mid size car.
