In 1975, to compete better with the AMC Gremlin, Ford introduced the Cologne built 2.8 liter V6 as an option on the Pinto, which, though far less powerful than the Gremlin's standard six, gave the Pinto a feature the Chevrolet Vega lacked. Sales of the Mercury Bobcat, the rebadged Pinto, were expanded to Lincoln-Mercury dealers in the United States that year, first as the Runabout hatchback and Villager wagon.
