The second generation Mondeo, the Mk III, was launched by Ford in October 2000 and was considerably larger than its predecessor, while the basic chassis and suspension were carried over. Ford dropped the New Edge design theme and used the Prodigy concept car as its reference, and paid great attention to an interior that answered the Volkswagen Passat. UK trims were simplified to LX, Zetec, Zetec S, Ghia, Ghia X and ST, and the ST200 was the sports version.
