The KL facelift came to Australia in December 1996, and in New Zealand the older KH Laser ended production at the close of the year when the Wiri factory shut. The fourth generation was assembled in Colombia and Venezuela as well, next to the Mazda 323 sold there as the Allegro. The Laser was a Ford badged version of the Mazda Familia, and it was one of the smaller cars in the Ford range of that period. Buyers in Australia and New Zealand often did not realise the Ford was based on the Mazda 323.
