A complete redesign was offered for 1971, including a horizontal wraparound front bumper with a massive vertical center section in the style of concurrent Pontiacs. The taillights lost the traditional rocket exhaust theme in favor of horizontal lights, and the rooflines were squared off with a formal air. The XL was dropped, as were the concealed headlight covers for the LTD, and the convertible was moved to the LTD series.
