The Escape's lack of a diesel version in Europe did not help sales of the Maverick, and the vehicle was temporarily discontinued there in late 2003. Elsewhere the first generation Escape and its Mazda Tribute sibling continued, and CKD assembly at Ford Lio Ho in Taiwan carried on after starting in 2002. In North America the Escape was sized between the EcoSport and the Edge in Ford's SUV line. The Escape was Ford's first SUV derived from a car platform.
