CKD production of the Escape began in 2002 at Ford Lio Ho Motor Company in Taiwan, which would later take over Asia Pacific production. The Escape remained on sale in Europe as the Maverick, where it had replaced a rebadged Nissan, and in North America as Ford's compact crossover sized between the smaller EcoSport that came later and the larger Edge. The first generation shared its platform with the Mazda Tribute.
