In 1978 the Mark IV was in its third year, and despite being Britain's best selling car throughout its production run it is now the rarest Cortina, because of poor rustproofing and its popularity with banger racers. In South Africa, from mid 1978, the Cologne built 2.0 liter Pinto four became available in place of the old Essex V4 in the L, GL and Ghia versions, the last with a V6, sold as four door saloons or estates. Ford Australia meanwhile built its own version called the TE, with the Pinto four and Falcon sixes, and a good number were exported to New Zealand.
