The first Capri entered production in November 1968 and was unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1969, with sales starting the following month. It was meant to repeat the Mustang's success in Europe, was drawn with a long bonnet and short tail, and used the running gear of the 1966 Cortina, with MacPherson struts and Escort sourced rack and pinion steering. Britain and Germany built different engine ranges. A facelift in late 1971 brought new suspension, tail lights and seats. Its model years run from 1968 to 1973.
