Production of the Capri began in November 1968, shortly before the car was shown to the public. It was designed under the working name Colt, but Ford could not use that name because Mitsubishi had already registered it, and the Italian island name Capri was chosen instead, the second time Ford had used it after the Consul Capri. It was built at Halewood for Britain and at Genk, Saarlouis and Cologne for the Continent, and based mechanically on the Cortina.
