A new engine was added to the Fireflite range in 1958, the year the Adventurer above it was already the premium DeSoto model, but Fireflites continued to offer high grade appointments in a full line of body styles. It was a year of sharp decline for DeSoto, whose sales fell by almost sixty percent from the 1957 total partly because of the recession and partly because of build problems with the 1957 cars.
